Direct answer: five paper families cover almost every sticker job in India – coated art paper for cheap general labels, gloss paper for sharp photo work, matte paper for writable premium labels, self-adhesive vinyl for anything that must survive water, and synthetic paper for chemical and oil exposure. Paper GSM runs 80-150 for sheets and 100-200 for vinyl label stock. Choosing wrongly shows up within weeks as curled edges, fading print or a label that peels inside a fridge (est.). This guide gives the material, price band and correct use for each one.
The Five Families and Where They Fit
| Material | GSM / thickness | Best use | Price band (est.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coated art paper sticker sheet | 80-120 GSM | indoor labels, MRP, short-life promotions | Rs 3-9 per A4 sheet |
| Gloss photo sticker paper | 110-150 GSM | photo stickers, cafe label art, gifts | Rs 6-16 per A4 sheet |
| Matte sticker paper | 100-150 GSM | writable labels, premium minimal brands | Rs 7-18 per A4 sheet |
| Self-adhesive vinyl (white) | 80-140 micron film | outdoor, bottles, vehicles, washable | Rs 18-45 per sqft |
| Synthetic / polypropylene stock | 60-100 micron | oil, chemical, soap and cold-chain products | Rs 30-70 per sqft |
Paper vs Vinyl vs Synthetic – When Material Decides (est.)
| Situation | Correct material | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sticker stays indoors, dry, short life | paper | cheapest per piece, prints beautifully |
| Touches water, fridge or bathroom | vinyl plus laminate | paper disintegrates within days |
| Handled daily in pockets or bags | vinyl laminated | paper edges fur up and tear |
| Oil, soap, sanitizer or chemical contact | synthetic (PP/PET) | paper absorbs oil and stains through |
| Vehicle or outdoor signage | cast/calendared vinyl, laminated | UV and rain resistance for years |
Thickness and GSM: the Two Numbers Buyers Confuse
Paper is measured in GSM (weight of a square metre) while vinyl and synthetic films are measured in micron thickness. A “thicker” paper sticker is not a stronger sticker – paper strength comes from the laminate on top. A 100 micron vinyl sticker with no laminate beats a 150 GSM paper sticker with a cheap gloss coat every single time on durability. Ask for the laminate, not for a thicker sheet.
Adhesive Matters as Much as the Face (est.)
| Adhesive | Behaviour | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Standard permanent | bonds hard within hours | general product and gift labels |
| Removable / low-tack | lifts cleanly for weeks | price tags, promotions, resale goods |
| High-tack | aggressive grab on rough or dusty surfaces | crates, tyres, textured plastics |
| Cold-proof / freezer grade | holds below zero | dairy, ice-cream, frozen food |
| Repositionable | peel and re-stick a few times | draft labels and packaging design work |
Full adhesive behaviour, including why peeling happens on cheap sheets, is covered in the adhesive types guide of this series.
Storage Rules That Save Whole Boxes (est.)
- Keep sheets flat, sealed and dry – humidity curls the liner and misaligns cutting.
- Rotate stock older than 12 months – adhesive strength falls silently with age (est.).
- Never store next to ink or solvent – fumes attack adhesive chemistry.
- Use roll media within the printed shelf life for professional jobs; test one label from each new lot.
Our Verdict
Material selection is where sticker shops quietly win or lose: paper for price, vinyl for durability, synthetic for chemistry, and laminate for survival. Match the three-way choice to the customer’s real environment – not to the price list – and reprint complaints vanish. Cross-check roll stock against the vinyl materials guide, pricing against the vinyl rate card, and set the machine class from the sticker machine price guide. FAQs – Sticker Paper Types in India 2026
What GSM sticker paper is best?
For indoor paper stickers, 100-120 GSM gloss or matte sheets handle typical shop printing well. Higher GSM feels more premium but does not add weather resistance – that is the laminate’s job. For anything facing water or handling, switch to vinyl film instead of chasing thicker paper.
Which sticker paper is waterproof?
True paper-based sticker paper is never waterproof – it is water-resistant at best. Waterproof stickers use a vinyl or polypropylene face, usually with a gloss or matte laminate on top. In practice, waterproof means vinyl plus laminate, nothing less.
Is vinyl sticker paper better than normal paper?
For durability, yes – substantially. Vinyl handles moisture, sunlight, abrasion and washing far better than paper. For short-life indoor labels sold on price, paper remains 3-5 times cheaper per unit. The correct answer depends on where the sticker will live, not on a universal ranking.
Can I print stickers on my normal home printer?
Yes, using self-adhesive A4 sticker sheets designed for inkjet printers. Use pigment inks for better fade resistance, allow full drying before trimming, and avoid uncoated cheap sheets that smudge. Normal printers cannot handle vinyl roll media, which is why shop-level durability requires an eco-solvent or UV machine.
What is the difference between white vinyl and transparent vinyl?
White vinyl has a white face that shows colours correctly and is the default for most stickers. Transparent vinyl leaves the base background visible so the sticker blends into the surface – great for glass, product-no-label looks and clear bottle branding. Transparent stickers need a white ink layer under artwork or the design turns semi-ghosted, which is why UV and UV DTF machines handle them best.
How long can I store sticker stock?
Plan to use sheet stock within 6-12 months and roll media within its printed shelf life (often 1-2 years, est.). Store flat, dry, sealed and away from solvents and direct sun. Old adhesive fails progressively – it still sticks, then lifts weeks later on the customer’s product, which is the worst kind of failure.
