Every CO2 laser operator eventually learns the same truth: the chart on the internet is a starting point, not an answer. Settings printed for European plywood fail on Indian commercial ply full of glue; a chart for a genuine Reci tube overshoots on an overheating generic. This guide gives a tested reference chart for 100W-class machines, scaling rules for 80W and 150W, engraving settings, and the test-grid method to build your own chart for YOUR tube and YOUR materials. All figures are estimates (est.).
Reference Cutting Chart, 100W Genuine Tube (est.)
| Material | Thickness | Speed (mm per sec) | Power | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Acrylic, cast | 3 mm | 20-25 | 60-70% | flame-polished edge, paper mask on |
| Acrylic, cast | 6 mm | 10-14 | 75-85% | single pass, strong air assist |
| Acrylic, cast | 8 mm | 6-9 | 85-95% | raise sheet off honeycomb to avoid bounce marks |
| MDF | 3 mm | 18-24 | 60-70% | resin smoke, extraction mandatory |
| MDF | 6 mm | 8-12 | 80-90% | sealed dark edge is normal |
| MDF | 9 mm | 4-6 | 90-100% | check corner lift before batch runs |
| Commercial plywood | 4 mm | 12-16 | 70-80% | glue pockets break the line, test first |
| Commercial plywood | 6 mm | 7-10 | 85-95% | marine ply cuts cleaner |
| Leather, natural | 2-3 mm | 25-35 | 40-55% | low power prevents scorched edges |
| Fabric, cotton or felt | 1-3 mm | 30-50 | 30-45% | sealed edge prevents fraying |
| Paper and card | 250-350 gsm | 40-60 | 15-25% | air assist off or very low |
Scaling the Chart to 80W and 150W Machines
| Your tube | Adjustment vs 100W chart |
|---|---|
| 80W genuine | cut speeds down 20-25%, or drop one thickness class per material |
| 100W genuine | use chart as printed |
| 130W genuine | speeds up 25-35%, or add 2-3 mm per material |
| 150W genuine | speeds up 40-50%, or add 3-4 mm per material |
| Generic unrated tube | expect 20-30% below label claim; build your own grid, section below |
Engraving Settings Cheat Sheet (est.)
| Material | Speed | Power | Line gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acrylic, photo work | 300-400 | 15-25% | 0.08-0.10 mm |
| Wood and MDF, deep engrave | 250-350 | 30-45% | 0.10-0.15 mm |
| Glass, frosted mark | 300-500 | 12-20% | 0.10 mm, wet paper on surface |
| Leather, logo mark | 300-400 | 18-30% | 0.10-0.12 mm |
| Anodized aluminium | 400-600 | 20-30% | 0.08 mm |
Build Your Own Chart: The 20-Minute Test Grid
- Cut a scrap piece of the exact material and thickness you plan to sell – not a similar one.
- Run a 4 x 5 pattern of 15 mm squares: power rows at 20, 40, 60, 80, 100%; speed columns from slow to fast across your range.
- Pick the FASTEST cell that drops the square cleanly with a good edge – that is your production setting.
- Photograph the grid, note date and tube hours, and tape the result sheet to the machine cabinet.
- Repeat the grid every new material batch and every 500 tube hours – settings drift as tubes age.
Edge Quality Diagnosis
| Defect | Usual cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Angled or tapered cut walls | focus wrong, lens dirty | refocus, clean lens, verify nozzle height |
| Top edge charred | air assist weak | raise air pressure, check compressor output |
| Bottom does not cut through | power fading, bed unlevel | tape-test alignment, level bed corners |
| Melted acrylic edge, cloudy | speed too slow for thickness | raise speed, run a second fast pass instead |
Our Verdict
Print the chart, laminate it, hang it above the machine – then trust your own test grid above any chart, including this one. Settings are where tube health, chiller discipline and optics cleanliness become money. FAQs – CO2 Laser Speed Power Settings Chart 2026
What is the best speed and power to cut 3mm acrylic on a 100W CO2 laser?
Start near 20-25 mm per second at 60-70% power (est.) on a genuine 100W tube with clean optics and strong air assist. Tune with a small test grid – cast acrylic cuts cleaner than extruded at the same settings.
How much does a weak tube change my cutting settings?
A tube that has lost 20-30% of rated power forces the same job 20-30% slower or at full power with no headroom left. Recheck your test grid every 500 working hours and log the speeds that used to work.
Why do my plywood cuts stop halfway through the sheet?
Commercial plywood hides dense glue pockets that absorb the beam. The fixes: better marine-grade ply, slightly slower speed with headroom power, and a pre-run test strip along the actual sheet’s grain direction.
Should engraving power go up for darker marks on wood?
Raise power a little, but prefer a second fast pass or tighter line gap – high single-pass power burns wide, scorched grooves instead of crisp dark marks. Keep air assist gentle so ash does not blow into the engrave.
