Aluminium composite panel is the backbone of Indian signage and building facades – and it belongs on a CNC router, not a laser. ACP work splits into two skills: through-cutting panels to shape, and V-grooving fold lines so flat sheets become trays, boxes and column wraps. Shops that master groove-depth repeatability win the facade contracts. This guide covers bits, depths, feeds, table setup and the going job rates. All figures are estimates (est.).
Why ACP Work Goes to CNC, Not Laser
- ACP skins are aluminium: CO2 laser beams reflect off them and the polyethylene core fumes are corrosive – lasers are simply out.
- A 1325 CNC router cuts full 4×8 and 5×10 ACP sheets in minutes with clean, burr-light edges.
- V-grooving – machining a V channel through one skin and most of the core – is what turns a flat sheet into a folded 3D sign tray.
Bits for ACP Work (est.)
| Job | Bit | Price (est.) | Life on ACP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Through-cutting panels | single-flute spiral, 6 mm shank, carbide | Rs 350-900 | 15-25 working hours |
| V-groove fold lines | dedicated V-groove bit, 90 or 135 degree | Rs 900-2,200 | 20-35 working hours |
| Fine engraving on ACP | small V-bit or 3.175 mm single-flute | Rs 300-800 | 25-40 working hours |
V-Groove Depth: The Whole Game
| Sheet spec | Target remaining at groove | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 3 mm ACP, 0.15-0.21 mm skins | 0.3-0.5 mm of core plus outer skin | crisp 90-degree fold, no skin crack |
| 4 mm ACP, 0.3-0.5 mm skins | 0.5-0.7 mm remaining | folds clean for trays and column wraps |
| Too deep | outer skin cut through | panel scrap, fold snaps off |
| Too shallow | over 0.8 mm remaining | rounded fold, tray springs open, rejects |
Depth comes from bed flatness plus bit zero: surface the spoilboard, zero the V-bit on the sheet top, and re-zero every new sheet because ACP thickness varies batch to batch by a few tenths of a millimetre – that variance is the whole game.
Feeds and Speeds That Work (est.)
| Operation | Spindle RPM | Feed | Depth per pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Through-cut 3-4 mm ACP | 18,000-22,000 | 60-100 mm per sec | full depth, one pass |
| V-groove | 16,000-20,000 | 50-80 mm per sec | full groove in one pass |
| Aluminium sheet 1-2 mm | 16,000-20,000 | 25-45 mm per sec | 0.5-1 mm per pass, mist lube |
- Mist or kerosene-dab lubrication stops aluminium welding into the flute on long cuts.
- Chips must fly, not powder – powder means you are rubbing the bit to death.
- Hold-down: vacuum zone on, plus tabs or edge clamps; ACP vibrates and walks off vacuum alone near cut end.
Job Rates and Margins (est.)
| Job | Typical billing |
|---|---|
| ACP through-cutting for sign shops | Rs 25-45 per sqft of cutting |
| V-grooving for tray fabricators | Rs 15-30 per running foot of groove |
| Full sign tray, cut plus groove plus fold | Rs 180-350 per sqft finished |
Dust discipline: ACP chips are sharp aluminium plus plastic – a proper dust collectors at the shoe keeps rails alive and the floor safe.
Our Verdict
If signage contractors and facade fabricators operate within 30 km of you, ACP capability turns a CNC router into a rate-card business: cutting per sqft, grooving per foot, repeat orders all year. See ACP volume inside a full plant in the Rs 2.5 Cr signage factory case study and the Rs 1.75 Cr exhibition stall unit case study. FAQs – ACP Grooving and Cutting with CNC Router Guide
Can a normal 1325 CNC router cut ACP sheets?
Yes – a 1325 router with a 3.2 kW water-cooled spindle and single-flute carbide bits cuts 3-4 mm ACP cleanly in one pass. Add mist lubrication and a dust collector rated for metal chips.
What depth should a V-groove be for folding 3mm ACP?
Leave roughly 0.3-0.5 mm of core plus the outer skin intact (est.). Shallower grooves fold round and spring open; deeper grooves cut the skin and the fold snaps. Re-zero the bit on every new sheet.
Is ACP cutting profitable on a CNC router?
Moderate per-sheet rates, but strong volume: sign shops and facade fabricators order weekly, and cutting plus grooving together bills Rs 40-70 per sqft equivalent (est.). Utilization, not rate, makes it pay.
How do I stop ACP sheets slipping during cutting?
Run the vacuum table at full zone pressure, add edge clamps or tabs on small parts, and never rely on vacuum alone for the last 200 mm of a cut. Walking sheets snap bits and ruin edges.
