What Can Sublimation Actually Print On? The Coated-Blank Rule Explained Once and for All

Case Study: A Home-Furnishing Business Scales with Sublimation Printing

Updated: October 2026

Direct answer: sublimation can print on exactly two kinds of surface: polyester fabric (where the fibre itself is the receptor) and poly-coated blanks – mugs, metal sheets, frames, tiles and glass pre-coated with a clear polyester resin layer. Nothing else. Every normal mug, ordinary metal plate, raw glass tumbler or uncoated ceramic tile you bring home REJECTS the dye, because there is no polymer for it to enter. Understanding this one rule is the difference between a sublimation shop that profits and one that blames the machine.

What the Poly Coating Actually Is

Blank factories spray or dip a clear polyester-resin coating onto hard items and bake it on. At press temperature (180-200 C) this coating behaves exactly like polyester fabric: pores open, dye gas enters, pores close and trap the colour permanently inside the coating. The item underneath – ceramic, aluminium, glass – never receives any dye at all; the coating does everything. This is why scratched or old coatings print patchy no matter how good the printer is.

The Blank Master Table: Coated or Not?

How to Spot a Genuinely Coated Blank Before Paying

  • Gloss sheen: coated mugs and sheets carry an even, slightly deeper gloss; matte uneven patches signal cheap coating.
  • Weight and box marking: genuine suppliers label sublimation-grade; unmarked dusty lots are clearance stock risk.
  • The nail test: hard-coat quality resists a light thumbnail scratch at an unseen corner; soft coats scuff instantly.
  • Test-print one piece per new batch: run a dense red-black box – pinholes, orange-peel texture and grey wash reveal coating flaws in 5 minutes.

The Coating Wear-Limit Nobody Tells Buyers

Coating is a consumable surface, not a permanent one. Display and hand-wash use keeps prints bright for years; daily dishwasher jets, metal scrubbers and harsh detergent shorten coating life to months (est.). Sell photo gifts as hand-wash items, print a care line on your invoice, and 90% of fading complaints disappear before they exist.

Our Verdict

Memorise the rule and three-quarters of sublimation confusion ends tonight: polyester or poly-coated, and white or light base. When a customer hands you an uncoated surface, do not fight chemistry – reach for the What Is UV DTF Printing? decal route instead. Stock graded blanks using the sublimation blanks guide, price production from the sublimation cost per print, size machines from the sublimation machine price guide, and if a supplier’s batch is suspect, send us photos on the contact page – identifying weak coating lots before a bulk wedding order is exactly the kind of check we do daily.

FAQs – What Can Sublimation Print On? Blank Rule

Why did my sublimation print wipe off the mug completely?

The mug was uncoated. Sublimation dye has zero bonding sites on plain ceramic – it rests loosely on the glaze and wipes or washes off. Only poly-coated sublimation blanks work; buy blanks explicitly sold for sublimation, from suppliers who grade and label their coating quality.

Can I coat ordinary mugs myself for sublimation?

DIY coating sprays exist and hobbyists use them, but evenness, heat-cure consistency and adhesive durability are far below factory coatings – fine for experiments, risky for paid orders. Indian shops doing volume simply source factory-coated blanks; the coating premium over ordinary mugs is smaller than one reprint dispute.

Does the fabric need coating for sublimation?

No – fabric needs polyester, not coating. A 100% white polyester tee sublimates perfectly because the dye enters the fibre directly. Coating matters only for hard items that have no polyester chemistry of their own – ceramic, metal, glass, wood-MDF.

How long does a sublimation coating last on a mug?

On display or hand-wash use, years. Daily dishwashers, abrasive scrubbers and scouring powders erode any coating over months (est.). Magic-mug thermochromic coats are more delicate still. Advise customers with a printed care line and complaints drop dramatically.

What GSM or thickness should sublimation blanks have?

GSM applies to paper and fabric, not blanks – for blanks, judge COATING QUALITY instead: glossy even coat, no pinholes, high-gloss white base. Mugs in A-grade coating show whiter, sharper results; B-grade (economy) lots are fine for promotions but inspect randomly before bulk commitments.

Are gold and silver coated metal sheets good for sublimation

Yes – coated aluminium panels in white, silver (brushed metal show-through) and gold sublimate beautifully; the metallic base colours the artwork highlights for a premium finish. White panels give truest colour; silver and gold intentionally mute cooler tones – show the customer a sample first.
