What Is Sublimation Printing? The Science, the Colour Limit and What It Really Prints On

Sublimation Ink Price in India: Cost, Quality & Where to Buy

Updated: October 2026

Direct answer: sublimation is a printing method where special dye is first printed on transfer paper and then heat-pressed. At roughly 180-200 C the dye turns straight from solid to gas – the scientific meaning of sublimation – and the gas goes INSIDE polyester fibres or a polymer (poly) coating on a blank, then solidifies there. The result is a permanent, zero-feel print. The catch is built into the science: sublimation only bonds with polyester fabric or poly-coated items, and because the dye carries no white ink it only shows properly on white or very light surfaces.

The Science in 4 Requirements

RequirementWhy it is neededPractical note
Polyester or poly coatingdye gas can only enter polyester molecules or polymer coating – cotton has no grip for it100% polyester gives the brightest result; 65% poly gives a vintage, faded look
Heat 180-200 Cbelow this range the dye will not convert to gasaccurate press temperature is the difference between dull and brilliant
Firm pressurepaper must touch the surface evenly so gas goes in, not sidewaysthin silicone pads help on uneven blanks
Time 45-180 secgas transfer needs dwell timemugs take longer than flat fabric

What Sublimation Prints On – and What It Never Will

ItemSublimation resultNotes
White polyester t-shirt, jersey, sportswearexcellent, permanentthe flagship use – the print literally cannot peel because it is inside the fibre
Poly-coated white mugexcellentneeds the special coated mug – NOT a normal crockery mug
Coated metal sheets, bottles, photo panelsvery goodwhite-coated aluminium gives a premium metallic finish
Coated MDF frames, coated ceramic tilesvery goodphoto-quality gift items
Cotton t-shirt (any colour)failsthe dye has nothing to bond with – use What Is DTF Printing?, HTV or screen instead
Dark or black fabricfailsno white ink exists in sublimation – design will be invisible
Normal uncoated mug, bottle or glassfailswithout the polymer coating the dye has nowhere to enter – use What Is UV DTF Printing? instead

The Two Unbreakable Rules

Rule one: white bases only. Sublimation inks are transparent dyes and there is no white channel anywhere in the process. A black garment swallows every colour; even pale yellow changes the design’s tones. Rule two: polyester or coating only. Any seller claiming their machine sublimates cotton or uncoated ceramic directly is mislabeling the process – what transfers in such tricks is a film or coating sprayed on first, not true sublimation.

What a Sublimation Setup Costs (est.)

ComponentRoleEntry price band India (est.)
Sublimation printer (A4 photo size)prints mirror image on transfer paperRs 12,000-22,000
Sublimation printer (A3+ shop grade)larger items, faster duty cycleRs 35,000-85,000
Heat press (flat 38×38 cm)fabric, tiles, framesRs 6,000-25,000
Mug press (single or 5-in-1)mugs and cylindrical blanksRs 5,500-18,000
Sublimation ink + paper starter stockthe consumable baseRs 4,000-10,000

A complete mug-and-tshirt gift setup commonly lands between Rs 25,000 and Rs 90,000 (est.) – model-level numbers are in the sublimation machine price guide.

Where Sublimation Quietly Wins

  • Sportswear and jerseys: all-over printing with zero feel – the market standard for team kits.
  • Photo gifting: mugs, frames, cushions and keychains at very low unit cost (est.).
  • Cushion covers, curtains, home fabrics: polyester home textiles sublimate beautifully at scale.
  • Lanyards, mousepads, marketing freebies: thin polyester items made for speed and margin.

Our Verdict

Sublimation is the cheapest permanent printer in its lane – if your customer wants white polyester jerseys, coated mugs or photo gifts, nothing else beats its unit economics or feel. The method’s whole personality is those two rules: white or light base, polyester or coating. Respect them and jobs run clean; fight them and you waste blanks for months. FAQs – What Is Sublimation Printing? Full Guide

Can sublimation be done on a normal mug bought from a crockery shop?

No. Only poly-coated sublimation mugs accept the dye – a normal mug has no polymer layer, so the ink simply wipes off. Coated mugs are sold as blank stock and look slightly glossier than regular crockery. For printing on uncoated glass, steel or ceramic, the correct technology is UV DTF stickers, not sublimation.

Can sublimation print on black or dark t-shirts?

No – sublimation dye contains no white pigment and the inks are transparent, so on dark fabric the design becomes invisible. For dark garments use DTF, HTV or screen printing. Some shops sublimate a white patch and apply it on dark fabric, but that is a film trick, not direct sublimation.

Does sublimation work on 100% cotton?

Not directly – cotton fibres cannot hold sublimation dye, so prints fade away after a few washes. Workarounds include spraying a polyester coating, sublimating on a white glitter-HTV base, or using 65%+ poly blends, but for a smooth daily business on cotton, DTF is the correct answer.

Does a sublimation print fade or peel after washing?

On genuine polyester, the dye is inside the fibre, so it cannot peel and barely fades over years of normal washing – this is sublimation’s biggest strength. On coated blanks like mugs, hand-washing preserves the coating; hardness of detergents and dishwasher heat gradually age any coating (est. years of normal use).

What printer do I need for sublimation in India?

Dedicated inkjet printers with piezo heads filled with sublimation ink – most Indian shops use Epson-engine-based A4 or A3+ models or made-for-sublimation machines. A normal printer with ordinary ink cannot be switched to sublimation without damaging the warranty and result quality, so buy purpose-built or factory-converted units.

How much does it cost per mug in sublimation? (est.)

A coated white mug blank costs about Rs 25-45, sublimation ink and paper per mug about Rs 5-10, and power plus packaging about Rs 5 – so the raw cost sits near Rs 35-60 per mug, while market selling runs Rs 150-350 for custom photo mugs (est.). Gift-shop margins are the reason this business model keeps expanding in tier-2 and tier-3 towns.
