The whole point of a flatbed printer is simple: it prints what roll machines cannot touch – rigid sheets. But rigid is a big world, and new owners routinely discover profitable media months after buying the machine. This master list maps every mainstream flatbed media sold in India, what each is used to print for, the surface prep it needs and the selling rates it carries. All figures are market estimates (est.).
The Complete Flatbed Media Map (est.)
| Media | Printed Products | Prep It Needs | Sell Rate Rs/sqft (est.) |

| Acrylic (cast, 2-12 mm) | Photo acrylic, nameplates, LED sign faces, trophies, menu boards | Peel films, antistatic wipe, white ink behind color for front-face viewing | 200-500 |
| Glass (plain and toughened) | Partitions, doors, cabinet shutters, photo glass | Adhesion promoter advised, print on back face for protection | 250-600 |

| Natural wood / plywood | Rustic signs, nameplates, premium gifting | Seal porous faces, check moisture | 200-450 |
| ACP (aluminium composite) | Outdoor signboards, building fascia, wayfinding | IPA clean, prints direct, holds 3-5 years outdoors | 150-350 |
| Aluminium / metal sheet | Industrial labels, machine plates, awards | Degrease fully, coating quality varies | 250-600 |
| Ceramic tiles | Kitchen and bathroom printed tiles, photo tiles | Direct print for decor, clear coat for wear areas | 300-700 |
| Rigid PVC sheet | Display cutouts, prototypes, ID material | Prints directly | 120-250 |

What a Flatbed Machine Actually Requires From Its Media
Only three hard rules. The media must be flat and rigid enough to sit on the vacuum bed without curling – standard beds take sheets up to 8 x 4 feet and 50-80 mm thickness. The surface must be clean, dry and free of oils, because UV ink grips by instant curing rather than soaking in. And the media must tolerate LED-UV lamp heat – thick PVC and thin heat-sensitive films can bow if you run heavy white layers. Meet these three, and almost any sheet in the market becomes printable.
The Three Prep Steps That Decide Print Quality
Cleaning: one IPA or dust-free wipe removes the invisible film that causes ink beading and pinholes. Adhesion: glass, glazed ceramic and some metals need a primer or adhesion promoter – a Rs 500-1,500 bottle (est.) covers hundreds of sheets. Underbase: dark or transparent media need white ink printed first, so colors pop instead of sinking. Skip any of the three and you will reprint.
Media You Should NOT Put on a Flatbed
Roll vinyl and flex belong on roll printers – they curl on the bed and waste machine time. Oiled or uncured painted panels reject ink. Thin thermoforming sheets that soften under lamp heat warp mid-job. Knowing what to refuse saves more money than knowing what to accept.
Where the Real Margin Sits (est.)
Ranked by typical margin: photo acrylic and trophies (60-70%), glass decor and ceramic tiles (50-60%), MDF photo panels and gifting (50%), ACP and metal signage (40-50%), and sunboard as the volume bread-earner at 35-45%. A mixed shop quoting these rates recovers a flatbed investment in 18-30 months (est.).

Our Verdict
Print this list, pin it above the machine, and quote from it daily: sunboard and acrylic will carry 90% of local orders, glass and metal arrive once the market knows you print rigid, and tile or leather stays a weekend specialty. FAQs – UV Flatbed Printer Media List: Rigid Materials 2026
What media can be printed on a UV flatbed printer?
Any flat, rigid, clean sheet that fits the bed: sunboard, acrylic, glass, MDF, wood, ACP, metal, ceramic tiles, rigid PVC, corflute, polycarbonate, leather, stone and canvas board. Media must tolerate LED-UV lamp heat and sit flat under vacuum.
Does UV flatbed printing need special coated media?
No. UV ink cures instantly by lamp and grips most surfaces directly. The exceptions are glass, glazed ceramic and some metals, where a wipe of adhesion promoter or primer costing Rs 500-1,500 per bottle (est.) makes the print scratch-safe.
Which flatbed media is the most profitable in India?
Photo acrylic and acrylic trophies lead at 60-70% margin (est.), followed by glass decor and printed tiles at 50-60%. Sunboard earns less per square foot but brings daily volume that pays the workshop rent.
What is the maximum sheet size a flatbed printer can print?
Standard Indian flatbeds take 8 x 4 feet sheets, covering full sunboard and ACP boards in one pass. Smaller A1-size machines suit gifting shops. Thickness allowance is usually 50-80 mm including the jig.
Can a UV flatbed print white ink on dark media?
Yes – that is the flatbed superpower. A white underbase prints first on dark or transparent media, color layers over it, and a final varnish layer adds gloss. Three-layer jobs sell at the highest rates on the media list.
